Government offices, banks, and schools across the Highland Lakes will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20, in observance of Presidents Day.

Closures include banks; schools in Marble Falls, Burnet, and Llano; city and county offices; the Department of Motor Vehicles offices; and the U.S. Postal Service. Marble Falls City Hall will be open on Monday.

Presidents Day originated in honor of George Washington’s birthday, which falls on Feb. 22. His birthday became a traditional day of celebration after he died in 1799 and was eventually made official by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. Congress legitimized the celebration as a federal holiday in 1879 and extended it to government employees across the nation in 1885.

In the 1960s, the holiday was moved from Washington’s actual birthday to the closest Monday so it could be enjoyed with a long weekend. Many also include President Lincoln in commemorating Presidents Day. The 16th president’s birthday is Feb. 12.
