Marble Falls health science students to host blood drive, learn career lesson

FROM STAFF REPORTS
MARBLE FALLS — When people give blood, they help countless others survive accidents, surgeries, premature births, and other unforeseen events.
Residents can provide that life-saving substance when students of the Health Sciences Career and Technology Education program at Marble Falls High School conduct a blood drive from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the high school auditorium, 2101 Mustang Drive.
Students learning to be certified nursing assistants, pharmacy technicians, and Emergency Medical Technicians will watch as blood bank technicians collect blood from donors.
“Our new and current health science students will benefit from the event by donating blood and by exposing themselves to a career in phlebotomy, nursing, and health management and administration,” health science teacher Tiffany Stevenson said.
Those wishing to donate blood should be 17 years or older, weigh at least 115 pounds, and be healthy. Bring identification and eat a full meal before showing up.
Blood contains red blood cells, frozen plasmas, platelets, concentrates, cryoprecipitates, and plasma, all of which help patients with trauma, blood disease, and cancer.
Contact Stevenson at tstevenson@mfisd.txed.net to make an appointment, though walk-ins are welcome.
Donors will receive a T-shirt and snacks.
