SPICEWOOD — Three teens died April 2 after their vehicle collided with a bus carrying an Austin college baseball team on Texas 71 near the Blanco/Travis county line, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety report.

The collision happened just before midnight April 1 six miles northwest of Spicewood at the intersection of 71 and Falls Creek Road.

A DPS investigator reported that a Chevrolet Cobalt, traveling north on Falls Creek Road, crossed into the intersection of Texas 71 and collided with a 2017 Motor Coach bus traveling southwest on the highway and carrying Huston-Tillotson University athletes.

“The Chevy Cobalt failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection of Falls Creek Road and Highway 71,” the report stated. “The bus collided with the left side of the Chevrolet Cobalt.”

The driver of the Cobalt — June Mary Smith, 18, of Round Rock — and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene at 12:31 a.m April 2 by Travis County Medical Examiner Mark Escott, according to the report.

The car’s passengers were 17-year-old Isabella Torres and 17-year-old Taylor Nicole Mendez, both of Round Rock.

The driver of the bus, Adolphus Kimbrough, 62, of Austin, was transported to an area hospital with non-incapacitating injuries.

No other occupants of the bus reported injuries.
