MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls school cafeterias nailed perfect scores in both state inspections conducted this academic year.
“I cannot say enough good things about my child nutrition staff,” said Mary Davidson, the Marble Falls Independent School District child nutrition director. “It’s all or nothing, and anything short of 100 just doesn’t cut it with this group of dedicated ladies.
“That dedication doesn’t stop with the health inspections either,” she added.
Inspectors conducted a second check of all seven of the MFISD cafeterias during the week of Feb. 27-March 3. Each cafeteria earned a perfect score of 100.
The child nutrition staff also faced higher standards this year, though they’ve always strived for the best no matter the state rules.
During the 2015-16 school year and many years prior to it, state health inspections for school cafeterias looked at three categories — food, staff, and facilities — with a 27-point inspection. But Texas made inspections more rigorous for the current school year, officials said.
Inspectors still look at three categories, but apply a 47-point inspection process.
The process includes inspecting:
- food and how it’s cooked, stored, and served as well as its condition, quality, and temperature;
- staff and their health, cleanliness, and certification, while ensuring all managers are Serve Safe-certified and all kitchen staff are certified food handlers;
- and facilities for overall cleanliness, equipment use, and temperatures as well a properly maintained kitchen.
