BURNET — The departure of Burnet High School head boys track coach and defensive coordinator Kevin Hall has left a void in the Bulldogs coaching staff.

Head coach Kurt Jones appointed assistant coach Billy Cook as the interim head track coach and has begun the process of finding a permanent replacement for Hall, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Manvel High School.

“Coach Cook does a great job,” he said. “He was one of the ring leaders, who was working with the relays already.

“We’re taking outside applicants, and we’ll talk to a few outside people,” added Jones regarding the defensive coordinator position. “We’ll find the best person and right fit for that job.”

Hall left at the beginning of February.

Jones said Hall leaving for Manvel made sense for him and his family. Son Kody Hall is playing football at Blinn College, while daughter Madison is planning to enroll at Texas A&M University.

“That gets him an hour closer to where his kids will be,” the Bulldogs coach said.

The other factor is Hall’s friendship with Manvel head football coach Kirk Martin. Hall, who will coach the secondary, and Martin are very close, Jones said.

Manvel lost the 2015 Class 6A Division II state championship to Katy, 35-17.

“Coach Hall likes the tradition he walked into,” Jones said.

The defensive coordinator position was open because Manvel’s former coordinator, Brad Butler, was named the head football coach at Alvin Independent School District’s newest high school, Shadow Creek. Shadow Creek and Manvel are in the same school district.

The irony is Butler and Jones have been best friends since the first grade at Brownwood.

Jones said the Bulldogs wished Hall well in his new venture.

“Coach Hall has a new opportunity and a new chapter in his career,” he said.
