John G. Johnston, 86, of Horseshoe Bay died Feb. 8, 2016
John G. Johnston of Horseshoe Bay passed away Feb. 8, 2016, at age 86. He had a full life. This is not meant to be a sorrowful time but a story to celebrate a life fulfilled.
He was born in Selma, Alabama, the only child of John and Ruby Johnston, on Jan. 26, 1930.
Immediately after graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was trained as a fighter pilot at Goose Bay, Labrador.
He returned home, and after several months, he married Miss Diane Rodden, the mother of his two children, Eric Johnston and Laura Griffin.
His career of engineering sales for IBM spanned 38 years and concluded in 1992.
He is survived by his two children; current wife, ShuiFeng, of Nanning, China; and grandchild, Brian Johnston Griffin.

John Johnston was my good friend and mentor. I joined IBM out of college and John was directly instrumental in my growth and success at IBM and my future endeavors. Over the 50 years I have known, loved, and respected him, I learned many things from him that shaped who I was and sustained me.
He was more than just a friend and will be missed by many, and he will be remembered by all who have known and respected him. He taught all who knew him, lessons of integrity and individualism. He was one of a kind, he was a great friend, and he will be sorely missed.

I will deeply miss John I had the great opportunity to know him and work around him for a lot of years. I learned a lot from him and knew that if I had any trouble that I could count on him to guide me in the right direction. He met one of my grand daughters one time she was playing dress up as little girls do. He would comment on the funny outfit she had on almost every time he came over after that. She used to sit and talk history with him as I worked on his car. She was very interested in history and he was always ready to share it with her. I will surely miss him.

John was a good friend and a very interesting person. John was very knowledgeable in many areas and we had a lot of very interesting conversations over the years. I really liked John and valued his friendship. I will miss him.

I will forever regret not having the opportunity to have met your dad personally. His wit in his emails – and his emails you (Eric) forwarded to me will be missed. How wonderful that you had this many years with him – and that he maintained his vitality to the end.
