Lillie Juanita Schiwetz, 97, of Bertram died Nov. 24, 2015
Lillie Juanita “Nita” Schiwetz was born April 1, 1918, in Italy, Texas, and gently departed this earth in the early hours of Nov. 24, 2015.
She loved to tell people she was an “April fool.” Her beautiful smile and loving spirit brought much joy to her family, friends and all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. The memories of the life we shared will always remain a special part of our lives.
Nita was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Wayman Ellis Schiwetz; parents, Wirt and Sally Thompson; brothers, Ward and Wirt Jr.; sister, Beth Fellows; daughter Patricia Cummings; and son, Tom Schiwetz.
She is survived by daughters Sally Stemac and husband Ed and Waynene Murfin and husband Bob, all of Burnet; daughter-in-law Sue Schiwetz of Overland Park, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, Laura Stemac of Austin, Steve Stemac and wife Kellee of Plano, Ken Stemac and wife Liz of Houston, Kimberly Moore and husband Doug of Cedar Creek, Sharon Poer of Round Rock, Bobby Snyder and wife Lisha of Edmond, Oklahoma, Noble Cummings of Pflugerville, Wayman Cummings and wife Kathy of Pflugerville, Lauren Henry and husband Patrick of Lees Summit, Missouri, Evan Schiwetz of Overland Park, Kansas, Zina Ray and husband Darrell of Gilmer and Pam Dawson and husband Brad of Bertram; 25 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other dear extended family members.
For many years, Nita served as church secretary at Southside Christian Church in San Antonio. Later, she went to work at Kelly Air Force Base, where she was employed for more than 20 years and was eventually promoted to supervisor in the accounting and finance department. She continued her church involvement by teaching Sunday school classes and serving as a deaconess at the churches where the family resided. In addition to Southside Christian, she was a dedicated member of Highlands Christian Church and Woodlawn Christian Church in San Antonio and First Baptist Church of Bertram, where she maintained her membership for the past 15 years.
Nita was an avid, and very competitive, game player and was well known among family and friends as a consistent winner at bingo, dominos and Yahtzee. She won her final game of Yahtzee when playing her weekly game with her daughters just four days before her death. She also loved music, theater, fishing and any activity involving family. She instilled a love of all these things in her children, and she proudly claimed credit for any success they might have had in these endeavors.
Nita and Wayman were excellent examples of Christian living and instilled a love of God and his creation in their children.
A service is 11 a.m. Nov. 28 at First Baptist Church of Bertram with the Rev. Gordon Bergstrom presiding. Interment will be at Mission Park South in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate your consideration of a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
