Donald Murchison of Buchanan Dam passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 26, 2015, at the age of 79. He was born June 12, 1936, to Oscar and Willie Mae “Bill” Murchison in Burnet.

Donald married Dorothy Louise Campbell on Sept. 7, 1957, in Leander.

He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan Dam. He was a director of the Burnet County Fair and Rodeo Association for many years and a founding member of the Buchanan Dam Volunteer Fire Department.

A descendant of early Texas settlers and trail drivers, he became a rancher at an early age, beginning in 1937 when he was less than a year old. His uncles would take turns putting him in front of them in the saddle to ride for hours and “help” them round up the cattle. The love of the land and ranching was passed down from his grandfather and uncles, and he instilled the same love of the land in his children and grandson. He took great pride in working land that had been in the family since the early 1850s.

Survivors include son, Donald Mark Murchison and wife Jeannie of Buchanan Dam; daughter, Kathy Diane Murchison of San Antonio; sister Laverne Fleming of Marble Falls; grandson, Keenan Donald Murchison; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Keenan Murchison, Darrell Harned, Grant Barkey, Charlie Slangel, Jimmie Gholson and Bill Deiterich.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Nov. 30 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone in Llano, (325) 247-4300. A funeral service is 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the funeral home with the Rev. Danny Meegan officiating. Burial will follow at Murchison Cemetery in Buchanan Dam.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Buchanan Dam Volunteer Fire Department
