GEORGETOWN — The Marble Falls High School football team played its most complete game of the year Nov. 6 in beating Georgetown East View 27-9 to end the 2015 season.
The Mustangs (3-7 overall, 1-6 in District 25-5A) scored three touchdowns in the second half while the defense had an interception and a turnover on downs in the final two quarters to pull away after taking a 7-3 halftime lead.
Marble Falls head coach Matt Green saw this contest as a jumpstart to the offseason and the 2016 campaign.
“Number one:It sends the seniors out on an unbelievable note,” he said. “Number two: It sends you to the offseason on a positive. We have something we can build off of.”
The Mustangs scored on their second possession of the game when junior quarterback Cade Cool ran in for a nine-yard touchdown and a 7-0 advantage with 3 minutes 42 seconds left in the first quarter. The eight-play 77-yard drive took 2:21 to complete. The Patriots were called for two personal fouls.
East View (3-7, 0-7) immediately answered. Senior kicker Dillon Luterek connected on a 33-yard field goal to end a nine-play drive and trim the deficit to 7-3 with a minute left in the first quarter.
Each team punted four times in the first half. Marble Falls had 138 yards of offense, while East View had 112 in the half.
The Mustangs scored their second touchdown of the game when junior running back Dalton Mayberry ran to paydirt from 14 yards out for a 14-3 lead with 3:42 left in the third quarter. The six-play, 87-yard drive took 2:22 to finish.
Marble Falls junior Heath Dooley intercepted East View on the next play.
Mayberry provided the answer when he scampered 26 yards on fourth-and-three for a touchdown and a 21-3 lead with 1:41 left in the third quarter. The six-play, 43-yard drive took 1:47.
The Mustangs’ last touchdown came when Cool found senior receiver Eric Cauble for a one-yard pass for a 27-3 lead with 7:03 left in the contest. The five-play, 47-yard drive took 1:15 to complete.
The Patriots added a meaningless touchdown to end the game.
Green said he saw great effort from his players, especially in overcoming two penalties that wiped out a 63-yard touchdown pass and 30-yard run.
He also noted that the East View defense had adjusted to the Mustangs’ run scheme, so they used quick passes to keep the Patriots guessing. And the credit for the success, the coach said, goes to the offensive line.
“They were amazing,” he said. “(Senior left tackle) Ryan Becker played unreal. I saw him trainwreck a kid.”
Mayberry had 18 rushes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Cade completed seven of 17 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown, while senior receiver Jacob Metcalf caught six passes for 57 yards.
In all, Marble Falls had 343 yards of total offense.
The Mustangs defense held East View to 169 yards of total offense.
“Our defense played lights out,” Green said.
