Suspect in Burnet school bomb scare arrested in San Antonio

BURNET — After a student alerted school officials regarding a texted bomb threat to Burnet High School on Oct. 27, law enforcement traced the message back to an individual and make an arrest in San Antonio later that same day.
At about 10:15 a.m., Burnet Consolidated Independent School District officials notified the Burnet Police Department about a bomb threat at the high school. A student reported getting a text from an unknown person that a bomb was set to explode at the school.
School and authorities evacuated the high school and sent the student to the Burnet Middle School gym. Parents were allowed to check out their children from the BMS facility, and officials announced classes at the high school were cancelled for the remainder of the day.
The Texas Department of Public Safety bomb squad, along with the Texas Rangers, responded to the high school as well. Authorities searched the building, but no bomb was found, officials said.
Burnet police said, with help from the student who first reported the text message, law enforcement agencies were able to locate the person who sent the text. Officials said police arrested a juvenile in San Antonio.
Burnet Police Chief Paul Nelson said that, while the school was not in danger this time, the student’s actions in reporting the possible threat were to be commended.
“Had this been a real bomb, the student’s quick response allowed us to take immediate action and prevent what could have been a very dangerous situation,” the chief said.
Police are still investigating the situation. Nelson thanked all the agencies and departments that assisted with the call including the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office dispatch, the DPS, the DPS bomb squad and the Texas Rangers.
