MARBLE FALLS — The Cedar Park High School football team showed why it’s the No. 1 team in Class 5A with a 51-3 win against Marble Falls in District 25-5A play Oct. 23.

And though the score doesn’t reflect it, Mustangs head coach Matt Green said his athletes competed with everything they had.

“I don’t think they have anything left,” he said. “They’re going to go home and go right to sleep.”

The Timberwolves (8-0 overall, 5-0 in district) scored on five of six possessions in the first half. They didn’t score on their sixth possession because they got the ball with 32 seconds remaining and were called for holding on the final play.

Cedar Park junior running back Tyler Lavine had three touchdowns of four, 34 and 10 yards. The 10-yard touchdown came after an interception by Timberwolves sophomore defensive back Gunnar Chriswisser. Laine finished the game with seven carries for 85 yards, all in the first half.

Senior athlete Jack Grimm had a touchdown run of four yards for Cedar Park.

The only passing touchdown of the half came when sophomore quarterback Mak Sexton hit senior receiver Tommy Lavine on a 47-yard pass.

Each drive took an average of 38 seconds and no more than five plays to complete.

The Mustangs’ only score came on a 24-yard field goal from junior kicker Gavino Tinajera to make it 35-3 with 32 seconds left in the half.

The Timberwolves began the second half by scoring on their opening drive when senior running back William Richter reached the end zone on a 10-yard scamper and a 42-3 lead with 10:46 in the third quarter.

The Wolves added to their lead when kicker Storm Jensen hit a 41-yard field goal to make it 45-3 lead with 6:29 left in the third quarter.

The Mustangs’ best chance to score in the second half was on their third possession. Marble Falls had first-and-goal on the Timberwolves’ one-yard line, but junior linebacker Jordan Diver caused a fumble and recovered it to turn away the Mustangs.

Cedar Park senior defensive end Brenden Solete finished the scoring when he tipped a screen pass to himself on the goal line and scored to make it 51-3 with 5:21 left in the contest.

Green noted the Cedar Park defense is District 25-5A’s top unit.

The Mustangs recorded two sacks. One was by senior defensive end Kaleb Burden to end the first half, and the other was by junior defensive back Heath Dooley in the third quarter to force a punt.

Cedar Park defensive starters were pulled after the third quarter, while the offensive starters played until midway through the third.

The Timberwolves had 28 carries for 214 yards and five completions for 73 yards.

The Mustangs (2-6, 0-5) had 31 carries for 92 yards and 10 completions for 93 yards.

Green complimented the Mustangs for using a tight end with a two-back set, a new formation installed specifically for Cedar Park.

“I’m proud of our kids,” he said. “I’ve yet to be disappointed by their effort. They are continually coming out and playing their guts out. I thought we were able to run the ball on a good defense.”

Marble Falls plays its last home game of the season against Leander Vandegrift at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive. Listen to the game on KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune or at KBEYFM.com starting with a 6:30 p.m. pregame show.

  1. Wouldn’t we better served to drop football from extracurricular activities than go out and get hammered ever Friday evening? The effort is there but the talent and numbers are not. I’m rather tired to be the answers on trivia questions.
