China Spring overpowers Burnet 42-20 in district opener
FROM STAFF REPORTS
BURNET — The China Spring Cougars proved to be too much for the Burnet Bulldogs in the District 13-4A Division I opener at Bulldog Stadium on Oct. 9.
The Bulldogs fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in district with the 42-20 loss to China Spring (6-0).
Burnet couldn’t muster much of a running game against a stout Cougars defense that kept the Bulldogs bottled up. Though Burnet came out on top in the turnover ratio and had fewer penalties than China Spring, those two stats didn’t play much of a role in the game.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but then it was pretty much all China Spring.
The Cougars, under the leadership of senior quarterback Kameron Coe, went on a 21-point run. But Coe didn’t do it on his own. China Spring running back Keaton Dudik rushed for 240 yards and two touchdowns on the night.
And the Cougars defense thwarted every attempt at a running game by the Bulldogs. The top rusher for Burnet was Brock Foster, who carried the ball seven times for 21 yards, one of which was a 19-yard touchdown run.
And with no worries from the run, the China Spring linebackers kept Austin Moore from working the field with his receivers. The Cougar defense sacked Moore six times.
While China Spring jumped out to a 21-6 lead, the Bulldogs didn’t give up.
Moore moved his squad down the field in the first half and capped off the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Galban to cut into the China Spring lead.
The Bulldogs forced a fumble on the ensuing China Spring drive, but couldn’t turn it into points. Still, Burnet went into the half with some momentum.
But China Spring stopped that momentum in the second half by reeling off 21 unanswered points. Burnet scored with just over a minute left in the game when Moore connected with Steven Gallardo for a 15-yard touchdown reception to make it 42-20 with the point after.
Burnet will look to get back on track Oct. 16 when they host Waco Robinson at Bulldog Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Listen to the game on 106.5 FM powered by KBEY or at KBEYFM.com by clicking on “Burnet Football.” The broadcast starts with a 7 p.m. pregame show.
