MARBLE FALLS — The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team lost 49-0 to San Antonio Holy Cross on Sept. 11.
“That team was big and physical,” Flames head coach Randy Denton said. “It’s the most physical we’ll see. Some of our guys needed to see that. It was a physical game and part of the learning process.”
The Flames (0-3) kept it close in the first quarter, only giving up a touchdown.
But in the final minutes of the opening period, Holy Cross (3-0) intercepted a pass on a screen. The offense took care of the rest, leading to a touchdown. That was the first of three scores that led to a 28-0 advantage at the half.
“They were a good team,” Denton said.
Holy Cross had more than 380 yards of total offense.
Going into the contest, the Flames coach noted Holy Cross would feature the tallest and heaviest players in the regular season. Denton said some thought he was crazy for scheduling such an impressive opponent, but he had no regrets. He believes the benefits of playing Holy Cross outweighed the drawbacks, and he reinforced that after the game.
Despite the outcome, Denton said he saw some positives by his players.
The most important is the Flames only lost one fumble. During the 20-14 loss to Boerne Geneva last week, the Flames had six.
The second was just about every Flame entered the game. Denton said that helps to create depth.
“We still fought them and stayed after them,” he said.
Having depth is a vital part of any squad that has the goal of playing more than 10 regular season games.
And that hasn’t changed, Denton said.
“I tell the kids we haven’t lost anything,” he said. “Our goals are still in front of us.”
The Flames welcome San Antonio St. Anthony at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 to Pony Stadium, 1511 Pony Circle Drive in Marble Falls.
