Doris Anne Bickham “Joe” Cowart was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Bay City, Texas, to Bryan and Anne Bickham. She passed away peacefully Aug. 30, 2015, at home with Tim and Aimee Cowart in Tow.

Doris, who many knew as “Joe,” was a 1950 graduate of Bay City High School. After attending business school, she worked as an employee of the city of Houston for 17 years, including more than four years as the personal assistant and secretary to Mayor Louie Welch.

In Houston, Doris met her sweetheart, Robert Thomas “Bob” Cowart, who she married on Sept. 28, 1957.

After moving to Tow, she worked as a real estate broker and was the owner of Cowart Store and Realty.

A lifelong Methodist, Joe was a member of Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church in Llano.

Joe was known for her quick wit, sunny disposition and love for others. Her keen sense of humor was renowned among those who came in contact with her. She spent untold hours serving her community in support of the Tow Volunteer Fire Department and the Ladies Auxiliary and as a certified ombudsman at Care Inn of Llano.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Cowart; parents, Bryan and Anne Bickham; twin brothers, Clifford Bickham and Robert Bickham; and sister Jean Bickham Kemp.

She is survived by her brother, Lane Bickham of New Braunfels; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Jim Heslip of Canyon Lake; as well as numerous extended family members and beloved friends.

The Bickham and Cowart families extend their gratitude to the staff of Llano Nursing and Rehabilitation for their loving care.

A graveside service is 11 a.m. Sept. 3 at Tow Cemetery.
