‘Solid’ Llano team ready to prove football polls wrong

LLANO — The Llano High School football team enjoyed 90 minutes of going through the playbook Aug. 7 to finish the first week of fall training camp.

The defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage to begin the session. Because the defensive linemen were able to put pressure on the quarterbacks, the linebackers and defensive backs swarmed to the football. About two passes were completed in the first 27 plays.

Head coach Craig Slaughter grinned at the observations, noting the offense couldn’t change the play at the line of scrimmage for a simple reason.

“The defense knows our signals,” he said.

Once some of the defensive players went to offense, the Jackets began moving the football.

The offensive linemen, led by new senior center Colton Center, opened holes for running back Mason Greenwood. Quarterback Wyatt Casey had time to throw the ball, finding Cody Miller a couple of times.

The coach said he didn’t think Center had a bad snap in getting the ball to Casey.

“I really think our offensive line is going to an asset,” he said. “I definitely think we have a chance to be really solid.”

Slaughter noted the Yellow Jackets were wearing full pads for the first time during the scrimmage, adding it took some time for the players to adjust to the extra weight while trying to block, take handoffs and catch the football.

The coach said his players are faster, more physical and stronger than in 2014. And the players are looking forward to the season starting. They believe they’re better than what the state polls have predicted they’ll finish, which is last in District 13-4A Division II.

“We had a very good nucleus coming back with talented sophomores,” Slaughter said. “We definitely got a battle coming. People don’t think much of us, and that’s fine.”

Llano will begin the season at Wall at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28.

Fans can see the 2015 Yellow Jackets when they travel to Burnet to face the Bulldogs in a scrimmage Aug. 14. The sub-varsities will play at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m. All games will be on the new synthetic turf at Bulldog Field, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.
