MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School football team spent day three of fall training camp Aug. 5 rotating quarterbacks and moving players to different positions.

Head coach Matt Green said that’s part of his plan for the 2015 season.

“I think we have a lot of depth at (running back and wide receiver),” he said. “I think we have a lot of kids who are interchangeable (in different positions.)”

That allows some athletes to rest a series while others are playing. It also means that if there’s an injury, other players will be able to line up correctly and know their duties. The coach also said fans can expect to see more athletes playing on both sides of the ball.

“That’s important,” Green said. “It gives you the ability to put somebody else in there, and you don’t drop off.”

Quarterbacks Cade Cool and Robert Atkinson continued to take snaps and run through the same plays.

Green said about 125 ninth- through 12th-graders came out for the sport. That’s a good number, he said, illustrating that coaches will have options on starters and creating depth. It also means competition in all spots that should help as the Mustangs continue preparation for the 2015 season.

The Mustangs also had to do up-downs for mental errors such as false starts.

Green said those mental errors — mistakes that players can control before the ball is snapped — drive coaches and fans crazy.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to stop it,” he said.

He complimented his players on another part of practice: their memory of the playbook. He called it very impressive.

The advantage is coaches are able to teach more since players know where to line up quickly. Otherwise, coaches are spending more time correcting athletes and moving them to the right spot.

“That has allowed us to really get a lot of reps,” Green said. “Our kids know what to do. That has allowed us to polish their techniques.”
