BURNET — A 7-on-7 state-qualifying tournament is June 13 at the Burnet High School practice fields.

The event is expected to draw 16 teams competing in four pools beginning at 8 a.m. The pool winners will play in a single-elimination bracket at noon.

Teams competing for a state tournament spot include Lampasas, Lago Vista, Taylor, Boerne High, Navarro and Yoakum. Lampasas will face Lago Vista, Bremen and Yoakum in pool A.

Burnet, Wimberley, Brady and Bandera also will play but will not advance to the semifinals no matter their records; all four have already qualified for the 7-on-7 state tournament July 9-10 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex, 3101 Harvey Road in College Station.

“There are some good teams in there,” Burnet head coach coach Kurt Jones said. “There are some salty schools that will be coming here.”

For the Bulldogs, hosting a state-qualifying tournament was a good move.

“Last year, we said instead of traveling to all these tournaments, let’s host one,” Jones said. “We have the perfect setup.

“We’re glad they’re all coming,” he added. “We want to host a quality tournament. We’re trying to make it first class. We’re going to be able to compete and see some good ballgames.”
