BURNET — As school winds down, parents might be asking themselves, “What do we do with our kids now?”

Well, how about summer camp? Across the area, parents and kids can discover a world of things to do at camps from sports to theater. While the Highland Lakes area boasts numerous overnight camps, you can also take advantage of a number of day camps that specialize things such as cooking or just a place to let the kids hang out such as the YMCA of the Highland Lakes at Galloway-Hammond.

“We’ll have a lot of things for them to do,” said Cameron Bahr, the district executive director at the local YMCA. “There will be a weekly field trip.”

The field trips include excursions to the Waco Zoo, Longhorn Caverns, Camp Buckner and several more places.

“We’ve had people come in who’ve lived here for years and never have been to Longhorn Caverns,” he said. “So, here’s a chance for kids to check it out.”

The YMCA day camp is 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. June 1-Aug. 21. Parents can pick the number of weeks they want to register for from one to all 11. Fees and more information can be found at www.ymcagwc.org.

The YMCA isn’t the only place with daily activities. The Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes opens its doors for summer hours in June. Along with the regular daily activities, the staff offers connections with several local camps, including the T Bar M Sports Summer Camp (at a discounted rate.)

The Boys & Girls Club keeps the kids busy and learning throughout the summer (but don’t tell the kids about the “learning” part, the staff makes it fun.) Go to bgc-hl.com or call (830) 798-2582 (Marble Falls unit) or (512) 756-1444 (Burnet unit) for more information.

If your kids are into cooking, sign them up for Saucy’s Kids Cooking Camp. Saucy’s Catering in Cottonwood Shores is offering two sessions: June 15-19 and June 22-26. The youth will learn a variety of kitchen and cooking skills form reading and understanding recipes through proper and creative plating. They’ll develop the skills to create their own menu and finish the week by cooking and serving a lunch to two family members.

The camp is 8:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Monday-Friday. It’s open to ages 8-14. The classes are limited to 12 students, so sign up soon.

Go to saucyscatering.com or call (830) 693-4838 for more information.

Young airplane buffs might want to check out Freedom Flyers in Burnet, which offers youth aviation programs through the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes and the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District’s ACE Program. Call (512) 756-6163 or email cat@freedomflyers.org for more information, time and dates.

For the artist or those who just want to give it a try, the Highland Arts Guild and Gallery is hosting a free Summer Art Camp on June 15-18 from 9 a.m.-noon. The class is for ages 8-12. Size is limited, so call the guild at (830) 693-7324 for more information or stop by the gallery at 318 Main St. in Marble Falls.

The kids will try their hand at drawing, sketching, Native American arts and crafts, Texas Tanglers and more.

Local artists will teach the classes.

Kids can learn the value of relaxing, good health and yoga at Sana Vida’s Yogamazing Kids’ Summer Camp with Avery.

Sana Vida, 507 RR 1431 in Marble Falls, is offering several sessions this summer including June 22-26, July 6-10 and Aug. 3-7. The camp is 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. It’s open to ages 5-10.

Along with yoga instruction, they’ll learn about healthy eating, participate in outdoor and nature activities, art, cinema, journaling and music/movement. There also will be age-appropriate games and healthy snacks.

Go to sanavida.info or call (830) 693-6000 for more information.

These are a few of the summer camps and activities available to youth. You can find many of the other camps — including sports-specific ones — at local school district websites, including www.burnet.txed.net, www.marblefallsisd.org and www.llanoisd.org.
