MARBLE FALLS — Even potential wet weather and a venue change couldn’t slow the Burnet High School 7-on-7 football team.

The Bulldogs went 3-0 on May 11 for the second week of the Burnet 7-on-7 League, which took place at Mustang Stadium in Marble Falls. Burnet, Marble Falls, Llano and Lampasas squads are all taking part in the league.

Though fans are used to seeing Burnet win, the manner in which they were victorious was eye-popping.

Since Llano did not attend, Marble Falls split into two teams. Burnet stomped Marble Falls A 35-0, Marble Falls B 28-0 and Lampasas 28-14.

Burnet 7-on-7 coordinator Andy McHazlett noted the Bulldogs played better in Week 2 but feels like there’s plenty of room to be better.

“We still have a ways to go,” he said. “Not happy with some of our execution, but our effort is there.”

It also helped that Burnet had more bodies on the sideline for the second week of league play. That’s because the baseball team’s season ended over the weekend.

“We have moved some kids around, and they are slowly picking up their new positions,” McHazlett said. “Timing with the changes is off, but we’re getting better.”

Quarterback Austin Moore is returning. He won the starting job at the end of fall training camp in August. McHazlett said the quarterback’s growth over the last year is apparent.

“Austin is solid,” the coordinator said. “He has a great understanding of our offense. I was also pleased with Koby Edwards’ performance at quarterback. He is a sophomore who can sling it.”

The Bulldogs are looking for a new starting running back and have rotated in those vying for the spot.

McHazlett said the starting running back will have to be skilled at securing the football, catching it and blocking. He added it’s too early to form any opinion on that position right now.

“We ask our backs to be a receiver, a lineman and a running back,” he said, “so we will have to see them in pads to really get a good look at them.”
