Lola Gayle Hammett, 94, of Burnet passed away peacefully March 20, 2015. She was born in Burnet County on July 17, 1920, to Walter and Lucille Shilling.

Lola Gayle graduated from Burnet High School as salutatorian in 1938. She attended business college and classes at the University of Texas at Austin. During World War II, she lived and worked in San Antonio for the war effort.

She married Melvin L. Hammett on July 16, 1951, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Melvin and Lola Gayle spent the majority of their marriage living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

She dedicated 33 years of her life to government service, primarily as a defense contract administrator. She eventually returned to Burnet in 1991 to care for her mother and be closer to her daughter, Sarah.

Lola Gayle, or “Mammaw” to many who knew her, devoted much of her time and energy to her family and always took great pride in attending her granddaughters’ numerous extracurricular activities and events over the years. She was a beloved member of Vanderveer Street Church of Christ and enjoyed volunteering and serving with her church family. She will always be remembered for her selflessness and kind heart for others.

Lola Gayle is survived by her daughter, Sarah Sultemeir of Burnet; son-in-law, Johnny Sultemeir of Lampasas; granddaughters, Genesis Gayle Bridges and husband Brady and Eden Sultemeir, all of Fort Worth; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lola Gayle was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Doug Shilling, and sister, JoAnne Blackburn, and their spouses.

A graveside service was March 22 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.

Memorials may be made to Vanderveer Street Church of Christ in Burnet.
