Run off that meal with After Turkey Turkey Trot in Kingsland

KINGSLAND — I don’t know about you, but on the day after Thanksgiving, the first thing I want to do is go running. Fortunately, Charlotte Dilworth over at Kingsland Health & Fitness Center has everything lined up for a little run or walk.
And some of the proceeds even go to support Sharing the Harvest, a Kingsland food pantry.
“Yeah, I know not everybody is thinking about running after eating all that food on Thanksgiving,” Dilworth said. “But think of it this way: You ate all that food, and now you want to burn some of it off to make room for the leftovers. Well, come out and go for a walk or run.”
The fifth annual After Turkey Turkey Trot is Nov. 28 at the health center, 2132 RR 1431 West in Kingsland. The walkers start at 8 a.m. with the runners following at 8:15 a.m. The kids one-mile run/walk starts at 9 a.m.
Although Dilworth laughed at the idea, I was thinking, “Hmm, can I bring the last slice of pecan pie with me?” But you get the idea. After a day of eating, sometimes it’s nice to just go for a walk, jog or run.
And don’t feel intimidated if you’re not a runner.
“Oh, you can come and just walk,” she said. “We do have a few people who are competitive, but mostly this is just for fun and to get folks outside and moving.”
Registration is $40 for ages 13 and up and $15 for ages 6-12. Children 5 and under participate for free.
“In the last four years, we’ve donated more than $2,000 to Sharing the Harvest,” Dilworth said.
The calorie expenditure for the past four years has been pretty good as well.
Dilworth said she also realizes the After Turkey Turkey Trot falls on Black Friday, the traditional Christmas shopping day. But she looked at it this way.
“If you come out and run in the morning, you’ll be warmed up for the shopping later in the day,” Dilworth said.
And, she has a point.
