MARBLE FALLS — A new girls basketball season means plenty of new faces for the Marble Falls High School varsity team.
The Lady Mustangs will tip off the 2014-2015 season by welcoming Salado, a member of District 25-4A, at 7 p.m Nov. 11 in Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls.
“There’ll be a lack of experience on the varsity,” said head coach Chris Jost, who enters his third season at Marble Falls. “Sometimes, young teams are tentative. We’re not used to making plays on the varsity.”
The squad will have two seniors, guards Katelynn McCollum and Stephanie Ribera.
Junior post Reann Hall enters her third season on the varsity. Other returners include sophomore guards Morgan Hagood and Molly Myrick and sophomore post Aspen Woerner. Other members include junior guard Yvonne Espinosa; sophomore guards Tiffany Dunavant and Sydney Gibson; junior post Bailey Adams; and freshman post Aubrey Adams.
“Three or four played on the junior varsity last year, so they have nice chemistry,” the coach said. “Some of the kids coming up, they’re looser. We’ll run an offense that feeds to their strengths.”
The Lady Mustangs have been playing in scrimmages for the past several days. One was at Faith Academy of Marble Falls. And that scrimmage packed The Fire Pit.
In the end, the Lady Flames, who won the Class 2A state championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools last season, outscored the Lady Mustangs.
Still, Jost said the competition was worth the short drive to the academy, where Marble Falls also faced Austin St. Stephens.
Offensively, Jost said the emphasis would be on making better decisions such as when to take long shots, drive to the basket for a layup or drive and pass to set up a teammate for an open jumper.
“One bright spot,” he said. “We’re getting a lot of energy from the posts. We got tired but played against pretty good posts.”
He does not believe District 25-5A will be easier this season with the addition of Georgetown High and Georgetown East View. Each team will play 14 district games this season with Marble Falls beginning play at Leander Vandegrift on Dec. 9.
“Hopefully, (by then) we’ll have some chemistry and consistency on defense,” Jost said.
