LLANO — The Llano High School football team will end the season against Navarro, the District 13-4A Division II champion.
The game is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Llano Stadium, 400 Texas 71 East.
Llano head coach Craig Slaughter said while the Yellow Jackets (2-7 overall, 0-3 district) have been eliminated from the playoffs, earning a victory is still important, especially for the seniors.
“We want them to be prepared to take the field for the last time,” he said.
Still, he knows the challenges of facing Navarro (8-1, 3-0).
The Panthers are led by running backs Anthony Grant, who has 133 rushes for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns, Tanner Law with 80 rushes for 624 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Jared Leal with 62 carries for 465 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Ryan Young has 43 rushes for 293 yards and three touchdowns and six completions for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Will Eveld has completed six passes for 169 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
“They’re a solid team,” Slaughter said. “They’re extremely physical, extremely fast. They’re a very good football team.”
Slaughter called Llano’s 28-0 loss to Hondo on Oct. 31 disheartening.
“It was a game we had to have,” he said. “I thought we played OK.”
The Owls had 252 yards of total offense but suffered three turnovers. Meanwhile, the Jackets recorded 181 yards of total offense and had one turnover.
The Owls recovered two high Llano snaps on punts. One of them was inside the Llano 15 and eventually led to a score; the Jackets defense held Hondo on the other.
“There was nothing else,” Slaughter said. “We got beat. They controlled the line of scrimmage. They ran the ball better when they needed to. We had to do a better job.”
Slaughter said he did not believe the loss to Lytle the week before played a factor in the outcome against Hondo.
“Zero,” he said. “It wasn’t a rivalry game. It wasn’t an overtime game. We knew what (the loss to Lytle) meant for (the game against Hondo.) We lost. There was no hangover.”
