LLANO — Shell ’em, grill ’em, pie ’em, chocolate cover ’em or do whatever you do to them — there’s no denying pecans are the top nut in Texas, especially here in the Highland Lakes.

The Highland Lakes Pecan Show on Nov. 20 is a great place for pecan growers in Llano and Burnet counties to show off the quality of their pecans and learn a bit about them.

Pecan entries are due by 3:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at either the Burnet or Llano County AgriLife Extension offices. The Burnet office is located at 1701 E. Polk St. (Texas 29) in Burnet, and the Llano office is at 1447 Texas 71 East (the corner of Texas 71 and CR 303) in Llano.

This will allow the committee time to collect samples and process the pecans for this year’s show. The actual show will take place at the the Llano County AgriLife Extension Office.

According to Jamie Osbourn, the Llano County agriculture extension agent, pecan trees appear primed to put out a bumper crop this year. He added that pecans are one of the healthiest foods you can eat and work well in a host of dishes from desserts to main courses. Or you can just shell them and pop them in your mouth.

The show is open to all pecan growers in both counties, whether you have home trees or orchards. Entry forms are available at the two extension offices or you can call Burnet County’s office at (512) 756-5463 or the Llano County office at (325) 247-5159 to get one and a copy of the rules.

Local pecans that place in the Highland Lakes show advance to the Central Texas Regional Pecan Show in December.
