Burnet defense stifles Gatesville in 57-0 district victory

BURNET — The Burnet High School football team never left any doubt about who was in control of the District 13-4A Division I game against Gatesville on Oct. 24.
The Bulldogs defense only gave up one yard of offense in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs offense built a 43-0 lead by halftime on its way to a 57-0 win.
The Bulldogs (7-1 overall, 3-0 district) scored a touchdown on their first six possessions of the first half and settled for a 21-yard Alex Melvin field goal as time ran out on the half.
The onslaught began on the first drive with a seven-yard Cody Jones touchdown reception from quarterback Austin Moore. The extra-point attempt was no good, and Burnet led 6-0 with 8:36 left in the first quarter.
The Burnet defense forced a punt, then the offense responded with Moore scoring on a 17-yard run with 5:16 in the first quarter.
In an aggressive move, the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick at the Gatesville 45-yard line. Then, with 0:43 remaining in the first quarter, Steven Gallardo punched it in from three yards away to push the lead to 20-0.
Gatesville punted again, and Burnet drove 54 yards and scored on a 10-yard pass from Moore to Gallardo for a 27-0 lead.
Moore and Jones connected again for a touchdown on the following possession. This one was for 80 yards on a screen pass that Jones ran in with 5:56 left in the second quarter.
Burnet’s Brock Foster, who finished the game with 61 yards on eight rushes, scored the next touchdown on a 14-yard run with 3:37 left in the first half.
The final score in the half was set up on a highlight-reel catch by Gallardo on a tipped pass. With one second left from the four-yard line, Alex Melvin nailed a 21-yard field goal as time expired for the 43-0 halftime score.
Junior Keedrick Hill saw his first action of the year for Burnet to open the second half, and he rushed four times for 30 yards on his first possession, capping it off with a five-yard touchdown run for a 50-0 lead.
The final score in the game came with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter when Moore completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game on a 34-yard reception by Darius Johnson caught for a 57-0 lead.
Moore finished with 391 yards on 21-28 passing. Hill finished with 58 yards rushing on 10 attempts. Jones led receivers with 152 yards on six receptions with two touchdowns. Seven different Bulldogs caught passes.
The Bulldogs defense limited Gatesville’s leading rusher, Nick Gibson, to only 29 yards rushing on six attempts. Gatesville quarterbacks only gained 48 yards on 6-16 passing.
