LLANO — The Llano High School football team is using its bye week to rest and fine-tune for the remainder of the season.

The good news is the Yellow Jackets (2-5 overall, 0-1 district) have two weeks to prepare for Lytle (4-2-1). The winner of that contest takes a giant step toward the playoffs with only six teams in District 16-4A Division II.

“I’m looking forward to the break,” Llano head coach Craig Slaughter said. “We’ve been playing and practicing for eight straight weeks.”

Reviewing film, lifting weights and fixing errors rank at the top of the list for the week.

More good news is some players who have been injured are scheduled to return next week.

“We’re about to get a little help,” Slaughter said.

One of those returning players is lineman Colton Center, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 275 pounds. The Jackets have been relying smaller players to fill his shoes on the line.

“That’s a pretty potent combination,” Slaughter said of Center’s measurements.

The bad news is Llano has two weeks to stew over the 52-20 loss to Wimberley (4-2, 1-0) on Oct. 10.

“From the start, (the Texans) established themselves,” Slaughter said. “They’re very physical at the line of scrimmage. That set the tone from the first play. They controlled it all the way.”

Llano rushed 40 times for 154 yards and completed three passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite the loss to Wimberley, Slaughter said a win against Lytle would do so much for his squad.

“It’s an exciting game from the standpoint that all our goals are in front of us,” he said. “This game will go a long way in achieving our goals.”
