LLANO — The hill catches the initial attention of most runners, but when they consider what and who they’re running for, it’s only a minor obstacle.

“Yeah, the run starts off with a hill — Water Tower Hill, but after that it’s fairly easy course,” said Brenda Parker of the First Baptist Church of Llano’s Women’s Ministry. The run honors longtime Llano Elementary teacher and runner Shannon Kaspar. In fact, the Oct. 18 event is called the Shannon Kaspar 5K Run/Walk for School Supplies.

Kaspar, who taught for more than two decades at the Llano campus, could be found participating in many fun runs and 5Ks, Parker said. When the First Baptist Church of Llano Women’s Ministry started the school supplies 5K in 2005, Kaspar was one of the participants.

“She loved to run,” Parker said. “And she loved teaching. If anybody saw the need for raising money for school supplies, Shannon surely did.”

In October 2007, Kaspar died unexpectedly at the age of 46.

Parker said that after Kaspar’s death, organizers named the 5K after the avid runner and beloved teacher.

The event raises money to purchase school supplies for Llano Independent School District students in need as well as some classroom supplies.

The run starts at 8 a.m. at the First Baptist Church’s activity center on Berry Street (the church is located at 107 Luce St.) Registration for those who haven’t pre-registered starts at 7:30 a.m. the day of the race. The fee is $25 for adults and $15 for youth 18 and younger.

This year, families can register as a group for $55.

“This year will be our 10th year of the race,” Park said. “We’re pretty excited about it. People have been tremendously supportive over the years, and it’s great this has become a regular event.”
