Jerry also passionately loved and excelled at painting, photography, theology, politics, genealogy, being on the Gulf Coast beach and around any body of water and everything about electronics and computers.
Upon his return to Burnet in 1976, Jerry became deeply and compassionately interested in health care. He spent the majority of his time, money and energy on being an emergency medical technician, Special Skills and paramedic during those years. A founding member of the North Burnet County EMS, Jerry educated many people on ECA and EMT skills and dutifully served on the CAPCO EMS Board. In his later years, he served as a member of the Dinosaurs of the EMS organization. Jerry undoubtedly saved MANY lives himself and, through his effective teaching, helped save many additional lives through the efforts of his students.
He was a beloved husband of 47 years to Judy; an invaluable influence and wonderful father to twin daughters, Jacquelin and Jennifer; and proud Papa to grandson, Jordan Hawkes, and granddaughter, Alexandria Hyman-Smith.

Family was extremely important to Jerry, and this was further instilled by his ongoing participation in the family reunion called “The May Dinner” held every year since the early 1930s. Furthermore, Jerry was also very proud of his discovery through genealogy research of being an eighth generation American and a fifth generation Texan.
