Hill Country Community Theatre needs to fill director’s chairs

COTTONWOOD SHORES — With the upcoming Hill Country Community Theatre consisting of a mix of musicals and plays, executive director Mike Rademaekers is looking for some people interested in sitting in the director’s chair.
“Preferably, we’d like people with experience,” Rademaekers said. “But if you’re interested in learning the director’s role and don’t have any experience, you can volunteer as an assistant director. And there are other ways to learn and develop as a director.”
While the directors would obviously serve at the helm of upcoming theater productions, Rademaekers is also looking at developing programs and events outside the regular season lineup. One thing he wants to bring to the theater is a 10-minute play festival. It’s just like it sounds: The plays would be 10 minutes long and ideally feature a beginning, a middle and an end.
“A 10-minute play fest is a great way for people who have never directed before to learn about directing and develop into one,” he said.
The festival is still in the idea stage, but Rademaekers believes if it becomes reality, it would really increase the interests and resources for the local theater community.
As for the directors, he’d like to build up a list so when theater has a production or event in the works, he can reach out to people to get them involved.
The director bears quite a bit of responsibility for the production and overall performance.
“The director has the overall artistic vision of the performance,” Rademaekers said. “They’re the ones who take the play and decide what do we need the people to do and how do we set up the stage.
“The metaphor I like to use when people ask me what a director does is, ‘The director is the artist, the stage is the canvas and the actors are the colors,” he added.
