MARBLE FALLS — Though the Highland Lakes deer population doesn’t include mule deer, that doesn’t mean they aren’t highly regarded by area residents, conservationists and hunters.

On Sept. 25, the Burnet County chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation is holding its second annual banquet at Lakeside Pavilion, 307 Buena Vista Drive in Marble Falls. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the dinner at 7:30 p.m. and a live auction following. An individual ticket is $55, which includes the dinner and an annual MDF membership; a pair of tickets is $75, which includes two dinners and one annual MDF membership; a children’s ticket is $10 for the meal only; an adult meal ticket (for current and lifetime MDF members) is $20; and a sponsor ticket is $275, which includes two dinners and one sponsor-level annual membership.

Tickets are available at Mustang Equipment, 5515 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls.

Along with the dinner, which features a hand-breaded chicken-fried steak, participates can enjoy a number of prize giveaways, games and silent and live auctions. Some of the prizes and items available during the event include trophy hunts (last year’s game included deer, elk, antelope, turkey and ducks), several firearms (including a Ruger American .270-caliber rifle, a Weatherby Vanguard .308, a Howa .22-250, a Henry Big Boy .45LC and more), MDF artwork, MDF merchandise and other trips.

Though mule deer don’t roam the Highland Lakes, many area hunters head to the Texas Panhandle, the West Texas mountains and the Rocky Mountain states in pursuit of the animal. The MDF is the leading conservation organization that promotes efforts to build healthy mule deer populations. The organization supports mule deer research and habitat improvement projects across the western states, including Texas.
