BURNET — The first “Map Your Way to Burnet” plein air festival and exhibit is turning into a national affair, and one to which everybody is invited — even if you’re not sure what “plein air” means.

Plein air basically means painting “in the open air.” In other words, artists will scatter across Burnet and the courthouse square, set up their easels and paint the scenery: landscapes and cityscapes as well as anything else that catches their attention.

“Map Your Way to Burnet” is Sept. 20-21. Organizers say at least 13 artists have signed up to participate in this art competition. Yes, it’s a competition.

After the plein air artists create their works Saturday and part of Sunday, they submit them for judging with cash on the line. First place wins $700 with second taking home $400. The third-place finisher nets $250, while fourth earns $150.

The winners will be announced at 3:45 p.m. Sept. 21.

The entries are also put up for sale 4-6 p.m. Sept. 21 at a silent auction at CaroLee’s, 139 E Jackson St.

While the Highland Lakes boasts several incredible plein air artists, officials say many entrants are literally mapping their way to Burnet for this event. Artists from New Braunfels, Houston, Austin and even Kansas have signed up along with several local artists to participate in this inaugural event.

The event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of the prize sponsors, including Burnet Antique Mall, the Austin Steam Train Association, First State Bank of Burnet, First State Bank of Central Texas, Farmers Insurance and Canyon of the Eagles Resort as well as the support of His Art by Abbie Sue Pell, It’s Your Media Time, Crossover Marketing and Fiesta Winery.

Several of the artists also will set up booths to sell some of their previous works.

The competition draws artists, but the Art Fest on the south and east sides of the Burnet County Courthouse on the square is a wonderful place to check out this style of painting. The Art Fest runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 20 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 21.

But if you or your kids are looking to try out your artistic hand, check out the Chalk Art Contest on the north side of the courthouse. The Burnet High School art department is hosting his event.

From 6-8 p.m. Sept. 20, the Veranda’s Guest House, 108 E. League St., is hosting the judge and artists reception.
