BURNET — The Burnet High School varsity offense scored about four touchdowns during a 60-minute intersquad scrimmage Aug. 9.

But to head coach Kurt Jones, the hour-long affair went beyond the number of times the offense reached paydirt.

“It was what we needed and what we wanted to do on a Saturday scrimmage against each other,” he said. “We wanted to go pretty much full speed, film it and give us a chance to go in study it. There are younger guys in position battles we wanted to see.”

The scrimmage began with the starting offense against the starting defense, and the defense did not give up a score in the first 10 plays.

After the first series, the Bulldogs matched up the starters against the reserves the rest of the way.

Junior quarterback Austin Moore started. Senior quarterback Taylor Barksdale led the Bulldogs to a touchdown capped by a 2-yard run by junior athlete Brock Foster on fourth-and-goal.

Moore hit senior athlete Cory Cavender for a touchdown in the right corner after he used a pump fake.

Other touchdowns came from junior athlete Darius Johnson on a 14-yard catch on fourth-and-5 and receiver Wyatt Shepherd, who caught the ball as he was falling backward into the end zone in traffic to end the scrimmage.

Jones said he thought both quarterbacks did some things well and would like some plays back.

“They’re both still working hard and working very well,” he said. “With both of those guys, we feel like we can win. There’s still a couple of more scrimmages we’ll go through. The other guy is still going to be ready.”

The defense is further along in implementing the schemes right now than it has been in awhile, the coach said.

“We’ve really got it pretty good right now,” he said. “Our first-string defense, right now, I think we’ve got it pretty salty. I think we’re ahead of where we’ve been. I think we’re going to have a chance to better defensively.”

The Bulldogs travel to Llano for a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at Llano Stadium, 400 Texas 71 East.

Burnet begins the 2014 season at Marble Falls at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive.
