MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School volleyball squad is going about two-a-days a little differently this year.

The Lady Mustangs began workouts Aug. 4.

Head coach Julie Downs enlisted the help of head cross-country and distance-running coach Anthony Torns to create a morning conditioning workout for the Lady Mustangs. The players return to practices in the afternoon for volleyball drills on the court.

Downs said her team is enthusiastic about trying something new with the aim of getting better as a program.

That success all starts with the squad’s seniors, including Maddie Johnson, Hanna Wall and Shelbi Wyatt.

“I’m excited about the kids,” Downs said. “We want to turn (the program) around. We have to change our mental games. That’s our biggest adversaries.”

Last season, the Lady Mustangs finished with at 10-26-1 overall and 0-12 in district.

Downs said she has three setters she believes will give her squad a boost this season: junior Kelsie Tackitt, junior Natalie Chapa and Johnson.

“Kelsie is naturally strategic,” Downs said. “She’s going to need to know our varsity quick system better. She’s going to do well. Maddie will support her.”

Marble Falls will host a four-team scrimmage Aug. 8 at Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive.

The Lady Mustangs face Killeen Harker Heights at 3 p.m., Austin Hyde Park at 4:30 p.m. and Lampasas at 6:45 p.m.

On Aug. 9, Marble Falls travels to Fredericksburg, 1107 Texas 16 South, for a four-team scrimmage. The Lady Mustangs play Fredericksburg at 11 a.m., Hondo at noon and Uvalde at 3 p.m.
