Dorothy Marcille Wood was born in 1921 near Ballinger, Texas, where she was raised to value hard work and respect the land that sustained her family. She died July 17, 2014.

Dorothy and her husband, Alvis Marion, worked for 25 years as the foremen of the Hall Ranch in Water Valley, Texas, where they raised their two children, David Marion and Joy Louise. During that time, Dorothy was active in the local church and taught beginners Sunday school for more than a decade. In 1969, the couple had saved enough to realize their dream of owning their own ranching operation and purchased their own cattle ranch in Hamilton County, where they lived for the next 20 years.

Dorothy later moved, in retirement, to Wimberley, Texas, for 14 years, then finished out her life in Burnet, where she moved in July 2003.

In addition to working the land, Dorothy was known county-wide as the go-to rancher’s wife for all seasonal employees to find a hot meal and a warm bed. Her hospitality was known from West Texas to Mexico. An accomplished seamstress, she also ran the cutting department at Patty’s of Texas.

Dorothy passionately loved gardening, birds and wildlife and had a knack for cultivating all three wherever she lived. She was a tremendously grateful woman, who was often heard saying she felt sorry for the “city folk” during the Great Depression; for as poor as her family was, they never wanted for anything as they grew all of their own food and made all of their own clothes.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her three sisters and one brother. She is survived by daughter, Joy Shirley of Burnet; son, Mark Wood and wife Marion of Burnet; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and Teddy, the wild and loving Teddy Roosevelt terrier.

A funeral service is 2 p.m. July 26 at Hoover’s Valley Chapel and Cemetery, 7235 Park Road 4 West near Burnet.

The family would like to extend a special “thank-you” to the wonderful and caring staff of Circle of Hands and Bertram Nursing Home & Rehab.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation in her honor to the Dorothy Marcille Wood Foundation, a nonprofit run by her granddaughter to preserve wildlife habitat in Texas at 3713 Bellaire Drive South, Fort Worth, TX 76109; or to the Hoover’s Valley Cemetery Association at 7235 Park Road 4 West, Burnet, TX 78611.

Arrangements by Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 Texas 29 East in Burnet, (512) 756-2222. Condolences may be made at www.clementswilcoxburnet.com.
