CEDAR PARK — With a chance to change how they choose their representation, Pedernales Electric Cooperative members opted to stay the course with the current system of electing directors through an at-large system.

During the June 21 annual meeting at Cedar Park High School’s performing arts center, the members voted 9,219 to 7,957 to stick with the at-large process. The referendum had given members the option of going to a single-member district voting system.

PEC members also elected two directors.

Emily Pataki won the District 2 director position, while Kathryn Scanlon won the Director 3 seat.

Members voted in a variety of ways: online, by mail or in person at the membership meeting.

PEC Executive Officer John D. Hewa highlighted some of the initiatives and topics regarding the cooperative.

He said PEC continues to strengthen its power reliability using new technology and tools.

“The best practices that have helped us be strong, we’re looking to preserve, but we’re also looking at new technology and tools,” Hewa said. “This is a really complex business, and it’s changing very rapidly.”

PEC Board President and District 7 Director Patrick Cox shared some thoughts with the members during the annual meeting.

“We have returned to our core business and core values: planning for the future; providing safe, reliable and affordable energy to our members; returning capital credits to our members; and working in the most cost-effective manner possible,” he said. “We have made significant progress in the past five years. Thanks to dedicated, hard work of many members and PEC employees, we have made tremendous accomplishments in restoring trust, financial accountability and transparency while providing excellent, member-friendly services to our members.”

Cox called PEC the most transparent co-op in the country.

The board also held an organizational vote and chose Cox as president; Scanlon as vice-president; and Cristi Clement as secretary-treasurer.
