BURNET — The Burnet and Llano athletic departments have made more hires for the 2014-2015 school year, which were approved by each school district board of trustees June 16.

In Burnet, athletic director Kurt Jones said the hire of Lance Jones at Burnet Middle School completes the coaching staffs at both the high school and the middle school.

The two are not related, he said.

The athletic director remembers meeting Lance Jones’ father, coach Randy Jones, when he was working at Abilene Cooper. So Kurt Jones had a sense of the new hire’s background and approach to coaching.

“When Lance got out of high school, he spent four or five years in the Marine Corps as a trainer,” Jones said. “He felt himself going back to what his family has done.”

So Lance Jones enrolled at Angelo State and worked his way through college.

“He impressed us in a lot of ways,” Jones said.

In Llano, athletic director Craig Slaughter promoted Holly Clary as the girls track-and-field coach and hired Llano graduate Walker Woolman.

“Walker helped us the last couple of years,” Slaughter said. “He’d been doing student training, been around our athletic program.”

Clary has been a member of the coaching staff as an assistant for the past two years, he said.

“She’s a known commodity,” the athletic director said. “If we opened up the job, you hope you get a good candidate. I don’t believe you open it up if you already have someone here.”
