Marble Falls football makes four coaching hires, including coordinators; more to come

MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls Independent School District athletic director and head football coach Matt Green made his first hires for his coaching staff.

And the school board made them official when it approved them during its regular meeting June 16.

Robert Coplin was named co-offensive coordinator and also will coach receivers, while Chad Bishop will be the defensive coordinator.

Green worked with both men before their coming to Marble Falls.

Coplin spent the past five years at Lake Travis as the receivers coach. Before that, he was a member of Chad Morris’ staff in Stephenville. That’s where Green and Coplin first worked together before joining Morris at Lake Travis. In all, Coplin has been a part of five state championship teams. He also has experience in coaching track and soccer, Green said.

Bishop was the safeties coach at Lucas Lovejoy, Green’s previous team, for the past two years.

The other hires are Marble Falls graduate Blake Nesrsta, who will coach the offensive line, and Chuck Cook, who was at Lake Travis Middle School the past four years.

Nesrsta has coached baseball, basketball and track and field at Bel Aire and Bandera.

“(Nesrsta) seems to be very energetic,” Green said.

He summed up the other hires in the same way.

“(They’re) great men (with) tremendous character and integrity,” he said.

Marble Falls still needs several more coaches to fill out the football, softball and girls basketball staffs.

Some of the Mustangs coaches were hired at Austin Westlake when former Marble Falls athletic director and head coach Todd Dodge took over the Chaparrals in May.

They include Tony Salazar as the defensive coordinator; Branden Murdock as the offensive line coach; Doug Wilson as the assistant offensive line coach; David Granson as the receivers and strength and conditioning coach; Lee Munn as the linebackers coach; and Chase Hargis as the cornerbacks coach.

Former Marble Falls offensive coordinator Bill Poe was named the head coach at Justin Northwest in April. He hired away assistant offensive line coach Jake Smith and assistant coach Weston Franco from Marble Falls.

“We’ll go to work on hiring about five to eight more (coaches),” Green said. “I keep telling myself Rome wasn’t built in a day. I knew (when I came here) there was a big hill to climb. I feel like we got halfway there.”
