FROM STAFF REPORTS
BURNET — The Burnet High School 7-on-7 varsity football team posted a 3-0 record during pool play of its own state-qualifying tournament June 14.
The Bulldogs beat LaGrange 44-20, Bandera 33-20 and Christoval 41-6.
The Bulldogs already qualified for the state tournament by winning the Lorena tournament May 17, so they could not advance to the Burnet tournament semifinals.
Meanwhile, Marble Falls went 2-1 in its pool with wins against Lampasas (47-20) and Fredericksburg (46-45 in overtime.) Its loss was to Cameron Yoe, 39-14.
The contest against Fredericksburg went back and forth. Marble Falls had to score on its last possession of regulation to send it to overtime.
Junior quarterback Brennen Wooten hit receiver Eric Cauble, who was double teamed, for a touchdown to start overtime.
The Billies scored and decided to go for two and the win. The pass was incomplete.
The Mustangs began the tournament against Cameron Yoe. Marble Falls’ first three possessions ended with a three-and-out and two interceptions in the end zone.
Cameron Yoe took a 28-0 lead before Marble Falls responded.
By contrast, Burnet is now 23-3 since 7-on-7 play began in early May. Bandera gave Burnet its biggest challenge of the tournament. Still, Burnet flexed its muscle and got some stops. Then, the offense took over to put the game away.
Christoval, a new six-man team, trailed the Bulldogs 35-0 at the half. So Burnet began to shuffle players in different positions and simply had some fun.
Since Burnet could not advance, LaGrange represented the pool. The Leopards and Taylor each won their semifinal games to qualify for the state tournament.
