HORSESHOE BAY — Spots are still available to play in the third annual Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club golf tournament June 29.

This year the event is at Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort, 200 Hi Circle North in Horseshoe Bay, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. A silent auction also will be conducted at the resort.

As always, participants will be able to meet the coaches of the Marble Falls Independent School District, including new head football coach and athletic director Matt Green.

The format is a four-person scramble. Those who register before June 6 pay $175. That amount goes to $200 on June 7.

For those who only want to eat barbecue, the fee is $40.

“In the past, it’s definitely been the biggest fundraiser for us,” golf tournament committee chairman Josh Wooten said. “For most booster clubs, it’s the biggest fundraiser. It’s something we believe is the best way to make as much money as possible.”

The money goes into the MFABC general fund that is used to benefit all sports. When the athletic budget falls short for items needed by coaches, the club donates money to buy equipment such as pitching machines, helmets and other items fans and athletes take for granted.

Committee members are asking people who plan on signing up but haven’t yet to commit sooner rather than later.

“The thing is,” Wooten said, “we need to pay for prizes and advertising. It would help to have the money.”

In addition to playing golf at one of the state’s top resorts, the chairman said several Mustang athletes will be used as helpers during the tournament.

“They’ll be at different holes, they’ll be driving around,” he said. “We’ll have athletes in different sports doing something.”
