Questions answered, some remain in Marble Falls football coach search

MARBLE FALLS — The search to find a new athletic director and head football coach at Marble Falls Independent School District continues.

Former athletic director and head coach Todd Dodge resigned May 2 to take the same positions at Austin Westlake.

By law, the job has to be posted for 10 days before a hire can be made. MFISD posted the position May 2.

So while the Mustangs know they’ll get a new coach, there are other questions.

First, will there be spring football?

No. The University Interscholastic League allows 18 practices in 30 days during the month of May. Since the search for a new coach will not end before the middle of the month, Superintendent Rob O’Connor said it would be very difficult for a new coach to hire offensive and defensive coordinators and other position coaches before the month ends.

Second, will Performance Course be offered this summer?

“PC is still a go for the summer,” Performance Course coach David Granson said. “Either myself or another PC guy will run it. A lot will depend on who the next head coach will be and what he decides.”

Third, if the search for a new coach goes on after the school year ends, does the UIL allow players to get playbooks during the summer?

“I’ve never seen any rules prohibiting giving out playbooks during non-school months,” said former MFISD Superintendent Ryder Warren, who served on the Rules Committee of the UIL. “Physical activities can be conducted in the summer, but no specific skills workout (i.e. football) can take place, but I’ve never seen a prohibition on playbooks.”

Fourth, will the Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club continue the same activities and fundraisers that Dodge helped start?

“The golf tournament is a go at Slick Rock (at Horseshoe Bay Resort),” club president Richard Giesecke said. “The golf tournament is the biggie. We have fundraisers planned, and we have committees. I wouldn’t trade our community for anybody. People really do get involved.”

The golf tournament is 1 p.m. June 29 at the Slick Rock Golf Course, which is part of Horseshoe Bay Resort, 200 Hi Circle North.

Fifth, will the Todd Dodge Quarterback and Receiver Camp still be at Mustang Stadium in Marble Falls?

No. That event has been moved to Chaparral Stadium on the Westlake campus, 4100 Westbank Drive in Austin. It’s still June 16-19 with session I for players in grades 5-8 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The second session is for athletes in grades 9-12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $200.

And finally, have there been any other resignations to go with defensive coordinator Tony Salazar?

No. O’Connor said May 5 that no other coaches have left.
