Howard W. Westfield Jr. of Llano, Texas, passed away peacefully April 6, 2014, at the age of 86. Howard was born in Providence, R.I., on June 30, 1927, to Howard and Irene Westfield.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Terry Westfield; daughter Elsie Chandler, her husband Bill and their sons Andrew, Willie and Nate of San Jose, Calif.; daughter Audrey Millen and husband Norm of Llano; and son, William Westfield, his wife Julie of Denver and their sons Davis and Matthew.

Howard was a kind, adventurous and caring person. As a boy and a young man he was known as “Sunny” and showed a free spirit. He wanted to see the world and explore.

As a young Marine during World War II, Howard worked as a cartographer and Japanese interpreter. He loved to travel as a young man and rode his bicycle across the United States and around Europe. His travels took him to Brazil, where he met and married Teresa “Terry” Castronovo. They were both English and foreign language teachers in a high school in Brazil.

Howard loved to play chess and cards, go for walks, ride his bicycle, play golf, watch sports, read and spend time with his family.

During his 11 years living in Brazil, he was a dedicated German teacher and began raising his family. In 1973, the family moved to the United States, where Howard taught foreign languages at the Orme School in Arizona. At Orme, he was known as “Howie.” He loved being a teacher, and he enjoyed being in a school setting teaching and coaching soccer.

The last few years of his life Howard spent quietly in Llano. He enjoyed walking around the town and by the river.

He is missed dearly by his family and friends, and they will always cherish the many fond memories of life together with him.

May he rest in peace.
