Viola Lydia Baumgart Wooley of Burnet, Texas, passed from this life April 7, 2014, at the age of 95.

Born in Grandfield, Okla., on Aug. 9, 1918, to Herman and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Baumgart, Viola was a vivacious young girl who would, at times, ride to school on horseback with her older brother.

As captain of her team, Viola enjoyed playing volleyball as a young lady. She graduated from Donna High School in 1936.

Viola later married her childhood friend and neighbor, Thurston Wooley, in 1938. The Wooleys initially made their home in Donna, Texas. They grew their family through the adoption of their daughter, Mildred, in 1948.

The Wooleys also lived in Austin and Corpus Christi before moving to Durango, Colo., enjoying the outdoor experiences each had to offer. Viola loved to tell of the story of one of their many hunting trips when they were approached by a bear, which she promptly shot. The couple then made their home in Marble Falls, Texas, where they joined the congregation of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and again found enjoyment in what the outdoors had to offer.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Elvera and Edna; brother Edgar; and husband, Thurston.

Viola is survived by her sister Norma Boone of Kansas; daughter, Mildred Sowell and husband James of Bastrop; grandsons, Michael Bocox and wife Sandy of Baytown and Darren Bocox and wife Cheri of Deer Park; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Smith, Morgan Smith, Kaitlyn Bocox, Kirkland Bocox and Caden Bocox.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. April 9 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 1805 U.S. 281 North in Marble Falls, (830) 693-4373. A funeral service is 10 a.m. April 10 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Marble Falls. Burial will follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks in Pflugerville.
