CHINA SPRING — About the only chance Venus had against the Burnet High School boys basketball team was when it led 3-2 in the first quarter.

But once the Bulldogs took a 4-2 advantage, they rolled to a 61-28 win in a Class 3A bi-district championship Feb. 18.

Next up is Wichita Falls Hirschi at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Midlothian High School, 923 S. Ninth St. in Midlothian. Tune in to KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune or at KBEYFM.com to listen to the game live.

Burnet allowed Venus a total of 15 points in 32 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Burnet dropped in 14 points in the opening quarter alone.

“Kids did a great job executing what we wanted to do,” Bulldogs head coach Kiser said. “We knew Venus could shoot the three, 30 to 35 shots a game. It scares you. The guys played defense all night, suffocating defense.”

Burnet followed the same formula it used throughout the District 8-3A season. The Bulldogs had a double-digit lead at the end of the first period and relied on their defense to keep it.

Burnet senior post Clayton Baumgart led all scorers with 24 points followed by  senior guard Colton Stevens with 12 and senior guard Derek Kiser with 10.

The coach said the postseason competition will only get tougher, so the challenge is for the Bulldogs to avoid the pitfall they faced last year when they lost to Alvarado in the first round.

“We didn’t play with (enough) confidence,” he said. “(Against Venus), Clayton shot the ball with confidence, our guys handled the ball with confidence. We have to do a good job to get them ready.”
