LAMPASAS — The Burnet High School boys basketball team defeated Lampasas 37-20 in a District 8-3A contest Feb. 4.
The Bulldogs (17-11 overall, 7-1 district), who’ve already clinched a playoff berth, led 6-4 after the first period and 17-13 at the half. The score was 22-13 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Burnet head coach Roy Kiser said the Badgers slowed the pace and began fouling in the final period. Burnet was 11 of 13 during that period and 12 of 15 for the contest.
Kiser was happy his team responded well after its loss to Liberty Hill on Jan. 31. He said the players voiced their goals to one another and recommitted themselves to playing better defense.
He believes that’s what led to the win against the Badgers.
Two games remain in the regular season with Burnet and Liberty Hill still atop the district standings with identical 7-1 records.
Burnet faces Brownwood and Gatesville, while Liberty Hill plays Llano and Brownwood. If Burnet and Liberty Hill each have the same district record, they will share the district crown. Coaches have not yet announced how seedings will be determined for the playoffs. Tune in to KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune or at KBEYFM.com to listen to all Burnet basketball playoff games.
Because of weather and travel concerns Feb. 7, the Bulldogs will play at Brownwood, 2100 Slayden St., on Feb. 8 with subvarsity games at 1:30 p.m. and varsity at 3 p.m.

The Lady Dawgs seized control of the Feb. 4 contest early, taking a 16-8 lead after the first period. That went to 30-20 at half and 42-25 at the end of the third period.
Burnet head coach Doug Messer said he started his seniors, Rachel Adair, Valerie Solis and Sami Richter, and let them finish out the game in the final four minutes since it was their last regular-season game.
Junior guard Riley Scott led Burnet (18-11 overall, 6-4 district) with 32 points.
After the loss to Liberty Hill on Jan. 31, Messer said coaches went back to the drawing board and emphasized to players that they needed to be more active on offense.
“We’ve had better spacing on the floor, having people in better position to be a threat,” he said. “Our off-the-ball people are doing a better job of rotating.”
That also has allowed Scott to average 30.1 points the past two contests.
He said Solis, junior post Rose Bailey, sophomore guard Shaylah Hullum and junior guard Lauren Beckwith competed well.
