LLANO — The Llano High School boys basketball team defeated Gatesville 44-31 on Jan. 28 to sweep the season series and take sole possession of third place in District 8-3A.

The win means the Yellow Jackets (4-2) have taken a giant step toward ending an 18-year playoff drought.

Llano head coach Aidan Callahan recalled telling his then-juniors — who are now seniors — during a camp leading up to the 2012-2013 school to give him a chance.

“If you stay with me,” he said, “we’ll get in the playoffs. (Gatesville) is not out. But if we take care of the things we need to, we’ll get in.”

The Hornets (12-12, 1-5) took a 10-9 lead after the opening quarter.

But the Jackets began the second period on a 10-0 run to seize control of the contest. They never trailed again. Llano led 25-14 at the half and 31-19 after three quarters.

Callahan said he thought his team gave up too many rebounds in the third quarter and missed too many six-foot shots.

Still, the coach credited his team for responding in the second and third periods. He noted several players contributed with points or defense and did things that might not show up on the stat sheet.

“We’re hard to defend,” he said. “We’ve been balanced all year. I think it’s about what we do, I think that’s what we can control.”
