CEDAR PARK — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost 53-37 to Cedar Park in a District 25-4A contest Jan. 25.
Originally scheduled for Jan. 24, the game was moved because of winter weather concerns.
But playing the next day didn’t slow down the Lady Timberwolves. Cedar Park took an 11-7 lead in the first quarter and outscored Marble Falls (17-12, 2-7) at the end of each period.
But the scoreboard can be deceiving, Lady Mustangs head coach Chris Jost said.
Yes, the Lady Timberwolves led in the first quarter because they turned three Marble Falls turnovers into a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes.
But the Lady Mustangs got the start they wanted to begin the third quarter. Trailing 24-17, senior guard Sarah Stripling immediately scored to swing momentum. But foul trouble set in for Marble Falls; so with few ball handlers on the floor, Cedar Park took advantage.
That led to a 16-0 run to put the game out of reach.
“We didn’t recover,” Jost said. “In spots, we played good defense. But they hit eight 3-pointers; we hit one. We did a pretty good job of rebounding in the first half. They did better in the second.”
Next up is District 25-4A leader Leander Rouse, which is on a two-game losing skid.
“I would say we’re going to get their very best game,” Jost said. “Because they’ve lost two in a row, they’re going to be challenged to get it back going the right direction. They can clinch half of the district crown.”

MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost 75-38 to Cedar Park on Jan. 25.
The Timberwolves took a 23-8 lead after the first period. The Mustangs were outscored 19-18 in the second quarter and kept chipping away at the deficit in the third.
Marble Falls (10-18, 0-7) cut it to a 10-point margin with three minutes left in the third quarter. But that was as close as the Mustangs would get.
Cedar Park finished the game by dropping in 22 points in the final period.
The contest was supposed to be played Jan. 24. But because Leander Independent School District doesn’t allow athletes to play games when the school district cancels school, the contest was moved to the next day.
Marble Falls head coach Neil Laminack said he doesn’t want to use the schedule change as the reason for the loss. And, he added, the Timberwolves had to travel to play.
