BURNET — When it comes to area rivalries, Burnet and Liberty Hill might top the list. Athletes at both high schools bring out the best play in each other, and fans from both cities pack venues to cheer on their teams.
The Burnet High School student council is counting on a big crowd for the first Burnet and Liberty Hill Beans and Rice Drive when the Bulldogs basketball team welcomes the Panthers on Jan. 28 to The Doghouse, 1000 The Green Mile.
Fans are asked to bring dry or canned beans to the gym.
“(It’s a) No Place for Hate event to combat hunger and promote positive sportsmanship,” Burnet High School student council coordinator Bill Neve said. “We chose this game because Liberty Hill is our rival, and we wanted show that rivalries don’t need to be filled with hate but a desire to compete at your highest level.”
Neve said there are no expectations as far as the amount of donated food goes. Whatever is brought to The Doghouse will be given to area food banks. Because of the recent holidays, most food banks are looking to restock shelves because there are needy citizens in the communities they serve.
The Bulldogs know this and want to help, Neve said.
