LAMPASAS — The Burnet High School boys basketball team remained undefeated in District 8-3A play with a 46-21 win against Lampasas on Jan. 17.

“The kids work hard,” Bulldogs head coach Roy Kiser said. “We’re sitting in a good position. But we we’re 5-0 last year after the first round (of district) and ended up tying for second.”

The Bulldogs (13-10, 3-0) led the Badgers 8-5 after the first quarter and simply got better as the game progressed. After taking a 20-14 halftime advantage, Burnet outscored Lampasas 18-2 in the third period.

By the end, the Bulldogs scored 16 two-pointers to Lampasas’ six.

Kiser believes one reason opponents aren’t hitting their averages against Burnet is because of the Bulldogs winning their one-on-one battles.

“They seem to be taking some pride in the fact their guy is struggling,” he said. “We have matured in the fact guys doing it in the past have a desire to stop a guy. So far, we’ve been able to take everyone’s leading scorer and shut him down.”

Kiser said his players take the same approach to road games as they do home games.

“You have to go and compete,” he said. “Traveling is not all far. I guess it’s something we don’t ever emphasize.”

What equally impressed Kiser in the win was the parity of the individual points.

“That shows me guys have the courage to take the shots they had,” he said. “We did a great job on the boards.”

On Jan. 21, the Bulldogs host Brownwood, which is 0-18 on the season.

“You always hate to play games like this,” Kiser said. “We’re going to coach our guys to understand the importance of every game. We want to get better. We teach them not to overlook anybody. I don’t think they will.”
