MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team captured third place in its own Winter Classic tournament Jan. 10-11.

The Mustangs (2-1-1) earned wins against Salado 2-1 for third place and Killeen Shoemaker 5-1. They lost 3-0  to Austin LBJ and played to a 0-0 tie against Fredericksburg.

The tournament marked the debut of new Mustangs head coach Rick Hoover. He said the tie with the Billies showed him that his players need to stop playing through long balls and keep the ball on the turf to make passes.

They were able to do so in the next game against Shoemaker. But first, the Mustangs had to fight back from a 1-0 deficit.

Once one goal went in, the others followed at a fast rate.

“Very excited,” Hoover said. “Boys fought hard.”

When Marble Falls fell behind 1-0 against Salado, Hoover said his players kept their composure.

“We didn’t panic, played our game,” he said. “We’re getting there. Still a long way to go.”

ALL-TOURNAMENT PLAYERS: Ali Salinas and Jimmy Fermin

AGAINST SALADO: goals – Jessy Arreguin, Asir Riojas

AGAINST SHOEMAKER: goals – Fermin (2), Juan Campos, Marky Marichilar, Nick Cano

RECORDS: Marble Falls is 2-1-1 overall.
