CEDAR PARK — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost 46-38 to Cedar Park Vista Ridge on Jan. 10.
“We missed a golden opportunity to get a win,” Lady Mustangs head coach Chris Jost said. “We couldn’t hit enough shots to get over the cushion.”
The Lady Mustangs (13-12, 1-5) attempted 50 shots from the field but recorded 32 percent shooting and attempted eight free throws in the contest. The Lady Rangers’ eight-point margin of victory also was their biggest lead in the game.
With three minutes left in the game, Marble Falls trailed by two points, but Vista Ridge hit a shot. Marble Falls sophomore post Reann Hall countered a minute later to trim the deficit to three. The Lady Mustangs got the ball back but were called for an offensive foul. The Lady Rangers took possession and went to a stall offense. After a minute, Marble Falls had to foul. Vista Ridge then made free throws to secure the win.
“We rebounded even and had less turnovers,” Jost said. “We let them get looks for 3-pointers, but that was OK. We had open jumpers and missed a bunch in the lane.”
Senior guard Sarah Stripling led Marble Falls with 19 points but didn’t score in the final quarter. That’s because she drew a crowd, Jost said.
He praised the performance of senior point guard Blanca Fonseca, who had six points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds.
“She played really well,” Jost said. “She beat the defense to the basket a couple of times and came up with steals that kept us in the game.”
The second round of District 25-4A begins Jan. 14.
“I’m looking for us to go out and improve,” Jost said. “For our seniors, I want us to continue to play well.”
On Jan. 28, the Lady Mustangs will hold their Marble Falls Middle School night, and, on Feb. 4, the team’s seniors, their families and members of Upwards and Young Guns basketball leagues will be honored. Players will get into the game free of charge and will be presented to the crowd as a group at the half of the Marble Falls and Leander Rouse contest.
